Programme – Design a community Centre that reacts to the community’s needs. The site is located within the centre of Avondale along a chain of shops and adjacent to the town square, recreational space and to its west sits the residential block. The site is also rich in history being a prominent trade route and settlement for early Maori settlers.
We based our design on its rich Maori background and drew inspiration from the ‘Pataka’, a primitive communal storehouse which represented the community’s wealth and prestige. We integrated this with conventional community centre programmes and designed a museum and storage where the community can use, exhibit and store - enriching its culture and creating a legacy.
